Ok I had a complaint on the SOS and digging a little deeper
I had another recipe that one of the herd had sent in from a Marine
buddy. No idea what beef soup and gravy base is though.
I looked over the SOS recipe you sent and I don't think it's the
real thing.
Here is the one that I got in 1991 from a cook at Parris Island, SC.
It's NOT for an individual serving, but a really GOOD cook can
cut it
down to the correct proportions. When done properly it comes out
looking exactly like wallpaper paste (and I still like it.)

RECIPE FOR S.O.S.
(CREAMED BEEF ON TOAST)
18 Pounds of ground beef, thawed.
1 lb. 8 oz s. flour, wheat, general purpose, sifted.
3 oz. salt.
3 tsp. black pepper.
3 oz. beef soup & gravy base.
2 lbs. 7oz. milk, non-fat, powered.
2 1/4 gal. water, warm.
2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce.
1. Brown beef in it's own fat in steam-jacketed
kettle or roasting pan until beef loses it's pink
color, stirring to break apart. Drain and
skim off excess fat.
2. Add flour, salt, pepper. and soup/gravy base
of beef. Mix thoroughly. Cook about 5
minutes until the flour is absorbed.
3. Reconstitute milk. Add to mixture.
4. Add Worcestershire sauce; heat to a simmer,
stirring frequently. Cook until thickened.
5. Serve on toasted bread.
Feeds 100 Hungry Marines,
200 Delicate Sailors or
150 Squeamish Civilians
buffalo says You may wonder why it will feed twice as many sailors.
That is because we got 4 real meals a day and had a Geedunk we could
visit for snacks. Oh and we had China plates, glasses, and we sat at
tables and no one shot at us heh heh. The shipboard Marines thought
they had died and went to heaven.
