jason hirschhorn's @MusicREDEF: 06/27/2018 - Grammys Expand, Internet Money, Bey and Jay's Piracy Problem, Kinks, Ojai, Missing Girl Groups...

Listening to [my] songs, detaching myself from [them], there is an interesting narrative there: someone growing up in an era, diary of a nobody. An ordinary person growing up in London. Maybe that's some sort of legacy.

rantnrave:// It's unclear how expanding the number of nominees in the top categories will address any of the issues that have got the GRAMMY AWARDS in hot water the past couple years. With a gravity-defying 84 categories and room for more than 400 nominees, the Grammys don't have a quantity problem. They have a quality problem. Au courant pop music gets nominated in the major categories but tends to not win. And outside a handful of superstars, women have trouble even getting nominated. (And when they do, the RECORDING ACADEMY sometimes forgets to put them on the air.) Those pop songs and albums need more votes, not more nominations. And those women deserve the first or second nomination slots, not the seventh or eighth. But if the idea is simply to give the system a jolt and put more music in front of voters who may not otherwise hear it, I'm willing to be a little optimistic. And I'm willing to hope the Recording Academy's Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, which only recently began its work, will put better, deeper ideas on the table, with an eye not only on better appearances, but on better results. Here's hoping they do, in fact, step up... The Grammys have also taken a stab at redefining alternative music, which going forward shall refer to that which "embraces attributes of progression and innovation in both the music and attitudes associated with it," and which is "often a less intense version of rock or a more intense version of pop." I'm hereby nominating GUSTAVO DUDAMEL and the LA PHILHARMONIC for Best Alternative Music Album in 2019... AXS has what it says is a "game-changer" in the effort to let fans resell concert tickets while cutting bots and scalpers out... LIVE NATION, ST. VINCENT and science combine to prove, beyond the shadow of a biometric doubt, that live music is better... RAY DAVIES and DAVE DAVIES both say the KINKS are kinda sorta maybe getting back together, and I will kinda sorta maybe believe it when I see it. Give the people what they want, boys... 03 GREEDO is scheduled to turn himself in today to begin a 20-year sentence for drug trafficking and gun possession in Texas. Name the most heinous crime you can think of; there are currently plenty of people serving way less than 20 years for that. But anyway. His goal was to finish recording 30 albums before going into lockup, and on Tuesday he released the 27-track GOD LEVEL, not bothering to wait for New Music Friday for perhaps obvious reasons... SPOTIFY has a new chief content officer and she comes from the world of TV and video, which you are free to take as some sort of hint regarding the company's future... He made a movie about IBIZA but he never went... PRINCE CHARLES stabs BARRY GIBB... MEGADETH holds the door... RIP XIOMARA ALFARO and JAKE RAYMOND.
