jason hirschhorn's @MusicREDEF: 11/21/2018 - Thank You Leikeli47, Gospel of Jodeci, Taylor Swift, The Amen Break, Riffs v. Melodies...

As a person who grew up in Los Angeles, that's a very diverse place, I've always felt like that diversity is a blessing; it's not a problem to be solved, it's a gift to be thankful for.

rantnrave:// I'm thankful, right now, for LEIKELI47, whose weird and wonderful second album, ACRYLIC, opens with two songs set inside a Brooklyn nail salon and makes you believe the entire world is rotating somewhere inside that salon. Which maybe it is. Current politics and deep personal experience are woven into the masked rapper's conception of the salon, an environment she views as "safe havens for all of us—all women, but especially the African-American community," even if it hasn't always worked out that way. It's a sprawling album, freely ranging across the hip-hop (and hip-hop-adjacent) map as short songs collide into one another. Hooks jump out at you from all angles, and novellas hide among lyrical details: "Extension cord across the hall / Is how we keep the power on." Every song makes me want to hear the next... I'm thankful also for artists like JULIA HOLTER, who are processing current politics and personal experience in an almost abstract expressionist way, filling our 2018 ears with dreamily distorted colors and shapes... And for artists like MARIAH CAREY, who have figured out how to shut out the noise of the world and keep making good-to-great pop albums, and who probably don't care what you think (unless what you think is they should start performing songs from their most notorious flop in concert, in which case they're kind of all about that... I'm thankful for the half-century of music that ARETHA FRANKLIN gifted us... I'm thankful for congresswomen who can fluently quote CARDI B... I'm thankful for what Cardi B can do for Cardi B's mom... I'm thankful for the natural acoustic qualities of bathrooms... I'm ever thankful for the existence of ARLO GUTHRIE, who plays his annual Thanksgiving show at CARNEGIE HALL Saturday, and who says next year, the 50th anniversary of the ALICE'S RESTAURANT movie, which is based on the song of the same name, which is the reason he plays Thanksgiving shows in the first place, will probably be the last one. Sorry for the long sentence. It's a long song. You can also, of course, hear it on the radio on Thanksgiving day, which is the best place to hear it... I'm thankful for every Friday that isn't Black Friday, but even Black Friday is still FRIDAY and that will mean new music from the DIPLOMATS (aka DIPSET), RITA ORA, LAIBACH, JACCO GARDNER, CLIFF RICHARD, ART BRUT, MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND, ED HARCOURT and new old music from BAUHAUS. It's also release day for the second album by 6IX9INE, who is being held without bail in Brooklyn on federal charges that could land him behind bars for life... RIP CYRIL PAHINUI, BLANCHE BURTON-LYLES and SCOTT ENGLISH... MusicREDEF is off for the rest of the week. We'll be back in your inbox Monday morning. Thank you for reading, and have a happy Thanksgiving.

Lyor's Letter: What article 13 could really mean
by Lyor Cohen
I recently met with artists, policy makers and partners in Europe to find a better way forward on Article 13 of the European copyright directive. In my conversations, there was one question that never came up: what will happen to artists if the European Parliament version of Article 13 becomes law? The answer is, the music industry will make less money from YouTube, not more.
