"Fun isn't something one considers when conquering the media universe. But this... does put a smile on my face." Nine Reasons Why Disney+ Will Succeed (And Why Four Criticisms are Overhyped)
(Γ–zgΓΌr GΓΌltekin)
Tuesday - April 16, 2019 Tue - 04/16/19
rantnrave:// I'm back. Hi!... Just about everyone is a fan of THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY. Even if you don't love their content (WTF is wrong with you?), you have to admire what they've achieved. At the same time skepticism of what's next is fair. As MATTHEW BALL writes in our newest REDEF ORIGINAL, Disney is attempting perhaps the biggest pivot in blue chip history - one that takes the X-year old behemoth from a B2B to B2C company. That's hard. It's essentially unprecedented at this scale. But there are many reasons to be optimistic. Nine in fact. "Nine Reasons Why Disney+ Will Succeed (And Why Four Criticisms are Overhyped)." Disney may be entering the SVOD market late and without much of its best content, but Disney+ is going to thrive. And while some of the reasons are evident, most remain overlooked or misunderstood. We've been tracking them for 4 years and get what they're doing. We're bullish but it's going to be tough. But you know what? If they can't make it work, then no legacy media company can. And if that happens, we'll know once and for all that content isn't king... It's the final season. Think you know everything there is to know about "GAME OF THRONES"? You know nothing. Go deep. Get the knowledge with REDEF SET: "Winter Is Here: The Oral History of 'Game of Thrones'"... Friends doing well (and writing books): CHELSEA HANDLER's "Life Will Be the Death of Me: . . . and you too!"... PREET BHARARA's "Doing Justice: A Prosecutor's Thoughts on Crime, Punishment, and the Rule of Law"... JESSICA YELLIN's "Savage News"... This movie knocked me on my ass. Funny, freaky, scary and totally fucked up in a good way. Can't wait for you to see "PERFECTION" ALLISON WILLIAMS kills it... Did you love BTS on SNL? Getting into some K-POP or want to? Check the REDEF archives... Have you heard of BIGHEAD BALLOONS? This guy is a genius artist. His INSTAGRAM is something... Happy Happy Birthday to my one and only baby sister JODY STAMBOULI. She keeps me flush with brisket since Mom died. And to DAN FROMMER, ZACH JAMES, STACY GREEN, JODI GUBER BRUFSKY, and HOWARD MARKS.

THE ONE THING: What is Amazon?
by Zack Kanter
What exactly is Amazon? This is the question that has consumed me for the last ten years. I have sold to and bought from Amazon in about as many ways as one person can; I built an auto parts brand that sold thousands of SKUs to Amazon as a vendor (both stocking and drop ship) and as a marketplace seller (both "seller-fulfilled" and Fulfillment By Amazon, or FBA), before selling the company to a private equity fund in 2018. And I am now the founder and CEO of a venture-backed software...

Disney and the Future of TV
by Ben Thompson
Yesterday started with a truly remarkable piece of TV broadcasting: Tiger Woods capped an incredible comeback from personal (self-inflicted) turmoil and physical injury with his first major championship win in twelve years at The Masters: The moment was incredible on its own; that the CBS announcers saw fit to stay silent for two minutes and forty seconds and let the pictures and sounds from Augusta National's 18th green tell the story spoke not only to their judgment but also to the unmatched...

A mysterious condition makes marijuana users violently ill, and it reveals a hidden downside to the drug's growing popularity

Alice Moon once reviewed marijuana edibles for a living. So when a doctor told the 29-year-old Californian that she had to stop using cannabis because of a newly discovered syndrome, it threatened to turn her world upside down. Before giving up the drug, she wanted one last hurrah. She'd end five years of daily weed use on a high note, she thought.
