Reframing Valentine's Day

Hello Wonderful.

It's Valentine's Day, a Hallmark holiday we've always bristled at. If you're partnered, the pressure is on. Singles are left out. Breakups get fresh salt in the wound. The only joy might be found at elementary schools. We love the Galentines trend that's starting to take root and we've been working on our own trend: an annual Valentine's dinner with family, friends, kids, everyone we love--no partner required. But above all Valentine's Day should be about remembering to love the person you're guaranteed to spend the rest of your life with: You. Happy Valentine's Day to us all.

THE WHAT LIST

100% Editorial picks. No pay for play. Ever.

The Tracks.

Our friends at Bustle have put together a few sweet playlists whether you are spending V Day solo or with that special someone. Listen here

The Soup.

It's soup weather and we've found the best healthy recipes for nipping the winter chill. But, even more intriguing, what does your soup say about you? Take this quiz and find out if you're hot, cute, or sexy.

The Luxe.

Reward the love of your life (you) with a gift of self-care from our Procrastinator's Gift Guide. We made it for the holidays but it still holds up. And if you're looking for something a little more 'stimulating,' check out our aptly named TW V.Cast as we review a box full of lady toys that arrived at our editorial desk. Watch The NSFW Toy Box and see what's new in the self-love department.

The Self.

We're always finding excellent recommendations in The What Women, our private Fb Community. Here's a list of self-discovery and soul searching books recommended to Amy after her father passed away last summer.

The Pysche.

It's pouring rain here at The What HQ, a perfect day to listen to Tim Ferris in conversation with Gabor Maté, a physician who specializes in neurology, psychiatry, and psychology and is known for his work in addiction and depression. Next month we will be joining Dr. Maté and the Enneagram Prison Project at San Quentin to participate in our second session with incarcerated men who learn to free themselves from the prison of their minds. It's profound, moving work. See what they do here.

MEET THE PERENNIALS

Kate Flynn

Kate is a loyal reader of The What and reached out last year when we were planning our summit. We were scrambling trying to find healthy snacks for our guests and our dear friend Tina Sharkey, CEO of Brandless was the first to come to our aid by providing copious amounts of goodies and gifts. Then to our surprise and delight, Kate, a complete stranger, volunteered to send us giant boxes of Sun & Swell, her delicious and addictive gluten-free, clean snack bites. Women like Kate are a testament to the community of friendship we are trying to build here at The What, a place both online and IRL where women treat each other as good friends, not strangers. Today we feature Kate because her generosity, moxie, and ever-blooming adventurous spirit brilliantly exemplifies what being Perennial is all about. [continued ...]

TONAL CHALLENGE UPDATE
It's been roughly six weeks since we started working out with our Tonal. We haven't always been diligent (blame it on the rain) but we're back on track with six pounds down and arms of steel. Abs? Not so much but we're focused, determined and changing up our on-screen trainer and workout to achieve our desired results. The best thing about it all aside from the challenging workouts is the convenience. With all of our start of the year scrambling, we haven't had time to go to the gym. Tonal is currently available in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Go try one out yourself and see why we're hooked. Don't forget to use our code: thewhat for 3 months membership.
