Choreographer Jennifer Weber shares how she fused hip-hop and Tchaikovsky to create The Hip Hop Nutcracker — plus her ultimate hip-hop holiday playlist
What kind of hip-hop moves would a mouse bust out to battle a toy soldier? That's one of the questions Jennifer Weber pondered as she started choreographing The Hip Hop Nutcracker, her inventive, popular spin on the Tchaikovsky holiday classic.

Now that The Hip Hop Nutcracker is available to stream from home this holiday season, we asked the Olivier-nominated choreographer, who also co-created and directed the show, to share how she came up with the idea for this feel-good holiday mash-up, the Hip Hop Nutcracker superstar cameo that'd top her list (it's the perfect choice!) — and her surprising picks for her ultimate hip-hop holiday playlist.
1.  Where did your idea of fusing hip-hop and The Nutcracker originate?
A few years ago I was in a choreography workshop and the leader asked, "How do you make hip-hop vulnerable?" I thought this was a really interesting question and took it on as a choreographic challenge. Part of my creative exploration was to separate hip-hop movement from a predictable hip-hop beat. And to that end, I started experimenting with juxtaposing hip-hop dance with classical music. I think that classical music allows you to see hip-hop movement in a new way and at the same time, the physical articulation of hip-hop allows you to hear different sounds in a classical score. Bringing the two seemingly opposite worlds together showcases the beauty in both.
