Play This. Our Summer Soundtrack.

Hello Wonderful.

After an eternity of rain (yes, we know we don't have real weather in California), the sun is finally out. We're rotating our Radiohead for something sunnier. One of our friends said she loves to sing along to 80s tunes on road trips. Here's an 8-hour playlist we made for her drive to the mountains this weekend and for all you 80s lovers. Speaking of which ...

THE WHAT LIST

100% Editorial picks. No pay for play. Ever.

The Article.

The legendary Madonna turns 60 this summer and Vanessa Grigoriadis, our Madonna of pop culture journalists and all-time favorite writers, has captured the material girl's transcendence in The New York Times. Must read.

The Question.

We're Jeopardy fanatics (geeks) here at The What HQ. We even watch old episodes with our kids for family entertainment. See if you can answer the 6 questions Jeopardy champ, James Holzhauer, got wrong. We missed 1/6. See if you can do better.

The Tracks.

Whether or not you find yourself by a pool this summer, you can slip into summer vibes with this ultimate dreamy soundtrack we found on a French fashion website. Sultry. And if you're more Soundcloud than Spotify, follow the Archives of Awesomeness.

The Shoes.

As startup entrepreneurs, we often get impatient with the blood, sweat, tears, and years it takes to build a brand. But here's some inspiration: Birkenstocks, the former 'ugly' ortho sandal has turned fashion darling and it only took 123 years. The first Birkenstock store opened in 1896 in Germany but it wasn't until 1966 that the American Margot Fraser brought Birkenstocks to America (distributing them right here in our very own San Francisco, CA) just in time for the summer of love. Now more than a century later Birkenstock is at the height of fashion, collaborating with legit legends like Valentino, CΓ©line, and Rick Owens. Talk about Perennial. Cathy Horyn travels to Germany to get the scoop.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

THE SHOE.

We were buying up Freda Salvador shoes before we figured out we knew one of the founders. This summer you'll find us lounging around in their Tulip T-Strap Flats. Comes in three colors: Black Croc, White Croc, and Nude Calf (pictured here).
