Even if you did only two of these, you'd be better off

Hey there Potty —

It's six in the morning, and I'm sitting at a nearly empty ice rink. I've just returned from a trip to the west coast, and the jet lag is strong.

I'm here because my 15 year-old son—a hockey goalie—asked me to take him to open ice time, so he could practice informally with his peers.

I'd rather be back at home, brewing coffee or enjoying a last few minutes under the covers. But sometimes we do things we don't want to do. Especially for those we love.

And sometimes we do things because we know they'd make someone else happy.

Life is about choices, and despite thinking that we're controlled by the world around us, we can make small changes that can have a positive impact on our lives and the lives of those around us.

Twenty things you can do TODAY to improve your life

1. Be your best self, not what someone else thinks you should be.

2. Do more for people without expecting something in return.

3. Be positive, not negative. (Be the sun, not the salt.)

4. Be the solution rather than the problem. Instead of asking "why?" ask "why not?"

5. Complete what you begin.

6. Ask questions rather than blindly accepting the status quo.

7. Be known for something.

8. Show love to others and avoid the temptation to hate.

9. Spend time observing, not just seeing.

10. Spend less than you save.

11. Listen more than you speak.

12. Get out from behind your desk. Walk, bike, run.

13. Whatever your profession, read more — about things that have nothing to do with your job.

14. Build things and people up rather than tearing them down.

15. Be generous with your praise and stingy with your criticism.

16. If you must criticize, offer dos rather than don'ts.

17. Find a way; don't be the obstacle.

18. Spend time thinking and reflecting rather than reacting.

19. Embrace your uniqueness. Let your quirks stand out as strengths.

20. Leave the world around you a better place — whether it's your workspace, your neighborhood, your family, or your country. We're all in this together.

I hope you found this useful. Sometimes we need to hit pause on the digital craziness in life and to get back to basics.

Thanks, and I'll see you on the Internet.
