I'm off to Los Angeles this weekend to keynote SketchKon. (No other public events planned, but I'll be back in the spring for book tour.)
Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week: - Look, let's get this out of the way: Go vote. It matters. (Don't be one of these dopes.) We talk a lot about art in this newsletter, but every artist is also a citizen, and every citizen has a duty to do their part. Do your part. (Me, I'm a single issue voter.) It's so easy. Take a friend. Take a good book in case you need to wait. Just do it. GO VOTE.
- The many, many benefits of journaling. (Quoted in the article is local Austin professor James Pennebaker, author of The Secret Life of Pronouns and Opening Up By Writing It Down. Back in 2011, I drew one of his lectures.)
- I barely got any reading done this week, but I did read Joan Miró: I Work Like a Gardener, a slim, handsome little book of the artist's thoughts on his work. (I've been really inspired by my wife's gardening in the past year or so. See: "The gardens where ideas grow" and "beautiful things grow out of s**t.")
- Good art reads: The myth of whiteness in classical sculpture, Jerry Saltz on the auctioning of a painting made with artificial intelligence, and Alexandra Lange (author of The Design of Childhood) on the new Menil Drawing Institute in Houston, TX.
- My new favorite newsletter is Anne Trubek's Notes from a Small Press. (Warren Ellis, too, has a great newsletter, and he is extremely correct.)
- Poem: election season has W.B. Yeats' "The Second Coming" constantly creeping into my head.
- Ear candy: David Byrne shares a playlist of protest songs.
- Video games: It's probably been 2 years since I played a video game, but I ordered Red Dead Redemption 2 because I agree that the first game is probably one of the best westerns ever made. I binge-played for three hours one night when my wife was out of town, but it'll probably be another 2 years until I find time to play it again.
- Bits from my blog: I believe that paper is a wonderful technology, I love a good hot plate, and my 3-year-old is still my favorite artist.
- RIP Horacio Cardo.
