Hey y'all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. I'm putting the finishing touches on Keep Going. My secret to revision: reading aloud.

  2. I re-read James Loewen's Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong, which blew my mind as a teenager, and still blows my mind today. I remember buying it in a Waldenbooks at the mall with my mom. (I think because of the Howard Zinn blurb? I can't remember which book came first.)

  3. I started Lawrence Weschler's Everything That Rises: A Book of Convergences, and it's already rubbing off on me, because I've started seeing stacks of notebooks as paper skyscrapers.

  4. The portrait painter who can't see faces.

  5. My son and I have been making a bunch of zines. (Whatcha Mean, What's A Zine?)

  6. What teachers are doing to pay their bills. (For a lift after that, here's Lynda Barry's classroom tumblr and how Sally from Peanuts made one man a better teacher.)

  7. Draw Out The Vote is a state-by-state comics voting guide. (Please, please, please vote.)

  8. The melancholy of John Cheever's journals and the surprisingly happy journals of Jules Renard. ("The truly free man is the one who will turn down an invitation to dinner without giving an excuse.")

  9. Ear candy: the great Chilly Gonzales has a new album out, Solo Piano III.

  10. Some speaking news: I'll be at Texas Lutheran University next week — the event is free and open to the public. (I also spoke to Danny Gregory in advance of my keynote at Sketchkon in November.)

Lindsey Vonn Returns

She doesn't know what else to do. This is a failure of the media/sports industrial complex. We exploit them at younger and younger age...
