Logan Browning and Allison Williams star in the WTF thriller "The Perfection."
(Miramax)
Tuesday - September 25, 2018 Tue - 09/25/18
rantnrave:// I love creators. I love to appreciate them. I love to meet them. I love to see, read, and listen to their work and discuss it with them. Especially when they're friends. While I was reading the internet looking for things to nourish our heads, I found a review of my friend ALLISON WILLIAMS' new film THE PERFECTION. I knew she was working on something. She may have told me. But sometimes I forget. She's unique. She gets lots of offers but chooses very carefully and wisely. It's not about volume to her. I stumbled upon this review and then went looking for other ones. All were stellar. I emailed BILL BLOCK, CEO of MIRAMAX and asked if I could screen the film. He was kind enough to oblige. And as luck would have it, my friend RICKY VAN VEEN (happens to be married to Allison, he chose wisely as well) was in town and we watched the film together last night. Now, I didn't actually read the reviews. I read the headlines. Because I don't like spoilers of any kind. And the last film of Allison's I saw was a surprise midnight screening of GET OUT at SUNDANCE 2017. I went in cold and it made it that much better. Allison is brilliantly "using her celebrity image to create screwed up characters." This movie. Wow. I mean. Wow, as in WTF wow. Because, as she warned me before there are WTF mind-bending moments. I'm not talking CITIZEN KANE. I'm talking a smart, timely, beyond entertaining thriller that audiences will love. It's definitely a two-time minimum watch kind of movie. And boy is it fun. As FILM SCHOOL REJECTS says, "When you walk out of a movie like The Perfection, it's easy to get fired up and drop some extra-large hyperbole on your social network of choice. It's a film full of rage and forward momentum. It's a rollercoaster ride. And once off the ride, your instinctual reaction is to (a) high five the person next to you and (b) express a desire to ride that particular ride again." Bingo. Now, how I do I explain without giving stuff away? Allison plays Charlotte, a former world-class cellist who gives up her dream to care for her ailing mother. And after her mother passes away she throws herself back into that world. Or does she? It's a film about talent, perfection, work, sacrifice, need for approval, fame, mental health, sadness, power, violence, manipulation, brainwashing, delusion, abuse, revenge, justice and strength. The timing of the film is uncanny. It's a thriller for sure. It's a film for this moment in culture. A thriller for the #metoo era. I'd never seen any of Allison's work with Ricky. And it was pretty great to share our multiple WTF's. But also to see a guy very, very proud of his girl. And the bonus? We called her on the way to dinner to discuss. To make sure we understood everything. She told us some stories about the making of it. And we probably need to see it 1-2 more times. I don't think it has a release date yet. But I sure hope it goes for a theater run. This is absolutely the kind of movie you need to see with other people. They need to market to influencers of the genre and make sure, like THE CRYING GAME, that no one spoils the secret. Director RICHARD SHEPARD hits it out of the park as does Allison and her castmates STEVEN WEBER and LOGAN BROWNING. You think you know what's going on. Well, you don't. Go when it hits. I love what I do and I'm lucky... Congrats to GEORGE CHEEKS, part of the MTV NETWORKS alumni family... Being honest about your mistakes is the first step... Happy Birthday to AVNER RONEN and ERIC ALEXANDER. Belated to ELLIE WHEELER, NOAH WINTROUB, DAVID GOODRICH, JUSTIN ROSENBLATT, PAUL BORGESE, VINCENT BROADY, MICHAEL SIPPEY, JEFF YAPP, and CHRIS DORR.

How 'Maniac's' Creators Approached Mental Illness

Say what you will about "Maniac," but it doesn't lack for ambition. The new Netflix mini-series is ostensibly an adaptation of a Norwegian show about a delusional man in a mental institution, but director Cary Joji Fukunaga and writer/series creator Patrick Somerville took only the slightest shred of the original, planted it in fertile ground, and it blossomed into a piece unlike anything else in serialized storytelling.
