Is this the road life?

Is this just fantasy?

This week
Making a podcast is a weird thing. I know intellectually, as I sit alone at home with a mic, talking to Amina, that tens of thousands of people will eventually hear what we're saying. But it's so disconnected. In a way, recording episodes live makes much more sense. It's immediate in a very fun way. We can hear the gasps and awwwwws and laughs.

I'm trying to stay focused on what's great about going on tour with Call Your Girlfriend because road life is hard! From now til November 4, I am trying to stretch every day and eat a lot of leafy greens and lean into hydrogel facemasks. I have developed a whole new level of respect for anyone who makes a living on the road.

And speaking of respect, we've had some incredible guests so far. In San Francisco, Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza talked about how she uses her notes app to save angry tweets before she hits send. In Portland, Judith Arcana, who was a member of the pre-Roe underground abortion service JANE, gave us some eye-opening then-and-now comparisons. And in Seattle, writer Ijeoma Oluo explained how she sets boundaries when talking about race with white people. Geniuses, all.

You can get a taste of the SF show and listen to our conversation with Alicia Garza on this week's episode. If you're in Chicago, come see us tonight! And there are still tickets left in a few other cities, too.

I'm reading
A West Virginia man won the PowerBall jackpot and it ruined his life. This whole package from Curbed on Texas and California. A retired general gets real about Robert E. Lee. Anti-black hiring bias is as prevalent as it was in 1989. The myth of whiteness in classical sculpture. Adrienne Maree Brown's brief guide to making a better tomorrow. On Christine Hallquist's historic run for governor of Vermont. Behind the scenes with the men who make the “Real Housewives” into drama queens. Why can't all concert reviews be like this: "I saw Fleetwood Mac with my ex-boyfriend's secret girlfriend." What if we judged chefs, in part, on how good they are to their kitchen staffs—particularly the immigrants? Eight stories of men's regret. Swedes are microchipping themselves. The cockroaches of the ocean. Your real biological clock is death.

I'm also reading about 10 pages of The Remains of the Day every night, which is far more effective than any sleep-meditation app I've ever tried.

I'm looking & listening
Robyn's "Honey." Big Mouth, mostly for Maya Rudolph as the puberty monster. (How did none of you tell me about singing-tampon Michael Stipe?! I howled.) Happy Halloween to all you professional villains not employed in politics or the corporate world.

The Classifieds

Ethical clothing brands are gaining traction with women consumers. This is terrific. Alas, sustainable fashion is expensive. The next best option is to wear beautiful, like-new clothes that already exist. And We Evolve hooks you up with secondhand pieces selected just for you.
Check out Burst Your Bubble, a pop culture podcast that looks at -isms and -phobias in media. In the Halloween spirit? We have some spooky Halloween episodes: Dracula's connection to the Eugenics movement, why zombies are racist, and how The Exorcist is islamophobic. Listen here!
Are you writing a thing? You want a nice editor to help you polish it up before you publish that thing. Rates starting at just $58!

These classifieds are especially great for small businesses and side hustles. Click for (affordable!) rates and availability.
