In this week's newsletter: maps, marginalia, drawing, and more... View this email in your browser Hey y'all, Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:  Who cares if it's good or bad? Hang it on the refrigerator.   My 5-year-old and I just got into Luke Pearson's Hilda comics — they're like Tove Jansson's Moomin meets Miyazaki. Really good. Prepare to hear more and more about Hilda: Netflix is streaming a new animated series based on the books. (I want one of these Hilda dolls!)   My favorite maps and how they've inspired me. (I was spurred to write this by the beautiful new book, The Writer's Map: An Atlas of Imaginary Lands. You can read writer David Mitchell's excerpt here, and see a few more of the featured maps here.)   When people show you who they are, believe them.   Previously, I've written about the importance of marginalia — reading with a pencil — and this week I wrote about how reading the right book at the right time with a pencil can lead to your best writing.   Friends in the news: The Smithsonian covers John T. Unger's anatomical mosaics and Vijay Gupta is a MacArthur genius! (Funny story: we're friends because I saw him in an old Reading Rainbow episode and had to find out what happened to him.)   Drawing is the best way to learn. (Related: a newly-discovered ancient comic strip.)   A couple of good musician interviews: Chan Marshall and Chilly Gonzales. (Here's Chilly on stealing like an artist.)   What makes The Good Place so good. (The David Foster Wallace quote creator Michael Schur has hanging in his office could've fit nicely in Keep Going.)   RIP musician Otis Rush, artist Geta Bratescu, and engineer Geoff Emerick — his memoir, Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles, is worth a read if you're a fan. (Here are some of my favorite excerpts.)
