A newsletter from the desk of Austin Kleon

Hey y'all,

My whole crew has been in Los Angeles and Las Vegas for the past week. By the time you read this, we'll be in Austin for SXSW. Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing:

  1. Debbie Millman's podcast Design Matters is one of the best around, so I'm honored and delighted to be interviewed by her live at SXSW next week. (Monday, 11AM at the Fairmont. Details here.) Our conversation will be followed by a book signing of Keep Going at the bookstore in the convention center. (We'll also be talking together at How Design Live in Chicago in May.)

  2. It probably seems like I'm a really busy guy, but deep down I am enormously lazy

  3. Reading: I gobbled up Susan Orlean's The Library Book. (Perfect read for a former librarian on a trip to LA.)

  4. I'm a huge Christoph Niemann fan, but I somehow completely missed Hopes and Dreams, his beautiful book about visiting LA and meeting David Hockney. (Spotted on my sister-in-law's coffee table in her DTLA apartment.)

  5. I'm enamored with these MoMA maps of scenius. (Related reading: "How Do Artists Get To Be Famous? Study Says It's Who You Know")

  6. Speaking of scenius, about a half decade ago at the Texas Book Festival I had a wonderful conversation about collaboration and creativity with Joshua Wolf Shenk, author of the books Powers of Two and Lincoln's Depression. Josh showed me and my family an enormous amount of hospitality this week, and I wanted to give a shoutout to the really cool work he's doing with Black Mountain Institute and The Believer. (Their big festival is coming up in April in Las Vegas.)

  7. My favorite spot in Vegas was The Neon Museum. We were treated to an outstanding tour by native midwesterner and former Austinite Steve Siwinski. (You know it's a great tour when you walk away wanting to Google at least a half dozen things.)

  8. Ear candy: this trip has been so crazy I've barely had time to listen to the new Solange or this unreleased Arthur Russell track.

  9. Worth streaming: We watched the first Men In Black and that movie has held up!

  10. RIP actor Luke Perry. I had totally forgotten that I made this poem about him in 2014.
Thanks for reading. If you like this newsletter and want to support it, forward it to someone who'd like it or, even better, pre-order a copy of my new book.

Lindsey Vonn Returns

She doesn't know what else to do. This is a failure of the media/sports industrial complex. We exploit them at younger and younger age...
