Hey y'all, Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week: - My new book Keep Going comes out next month. Pre-orders are a HUGE help, so if you like getting this newsletter, do me a favor and pre-order a copy. They can be had for as little as $9. (Anywhere books are sold is great, but if you can, support your local indie. If you want a signed copy, order from Bookpeople.) If you pre-order before April 2, my publisher will send you a free poster of "Overheard on the Titanic." (!!!) This is a great way to help the book and get a nice piece of wall art for almost nothing. (I put a bigger image of the poster at the bottom of this email.)
- It should surprise no one given my love of libraries, but I am devouring Susan Orlean's The Library Book. Total page-turner. (Here are 5 other good books I've read this winter.)
- Inge Morath's photos of Saul Steinberg masks have inspired quite a bit mask making at our house.
- Spike Lee dropped "It's not my cup of tea" on the red carpet, adding a British variant to my list of things to say when you don't know what to say.
- At the risk of this email being too self-promotional, as of the writing of this email, Steal Like An Artist is dirt-cheap on Amazon.
- I took my 6-year-old to the amazing Griffith Observatory in LA yesterday and the show in the planetarium reminded me of the "You Are Here" poster in Harry Dean Stanton's room.
- Eye candy: Prince's estate has released over 1,000 official animated gifs.
- RIP to the great Jackie Shane, who had the beautiful motto, "Do what you want, just know what you're doing."
- RIP Mark Hollis of the band Talk Talk. Since his death, I've been re-listening to Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock.
- RIP Stanley Donen, most famous as the director of Singin' in the Rain, a movie I consider an essential piece of American art. A must-watch. If you've never seen it, you are in for such a treat. Trust me.
Good grief, that's three obituaries in one newsletter. February, man. It's even gloomy here in LA! Hang in there. Thanks for reading. If you like this newsletter and want to support it, pre-order Keep Going! If you're seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here. xoxo, Austin PS. Here's a closer look at the "Overheard on the Titanic" poster you'll get if you pre-order Keep Going! | | | |
