This week
Apparently these first few days of January are a really difficult time of the year for a lot of people. Just want to acknowledge that, and send you some extra love if you're feeling down.

On the podcast this week, several brilliant women are handing out permission slips for 2019: Permission to be more tender with yourself. Permission to make small changes. Permission to NOT reply to email. Permission to know your body better. It's great. Have a listen

I'm reading
The special misogyny reserved for mothers. It's infuriating how little the medical establishment knows about women's bodies. "You and me and our first years on T." Why can't we tip Amazon warehouse workers? How "business experts" are using Amazon stores to scam would-be entrepreneurs. The priest of Abu Ghraib. How U.S. involvement in Latin America created the modern refugee crisis. If you care about the fate of small towns, you should be pro-immigrant. A new cookbook pays homage to the inventive culinary contributions of enslaved African womenWhole birds are the latest in fancy dining (and it's difficult for me to fully express how gross I find this). Why legit medical research on cannabis is stagnating. The dubious promise of habit-tracking appsExercise isn't everything. Wealth is the real skin-care hack. "We carry around our past selves inside us." Jenny Erpenbeck's novel Go, Went, Gone.

Surviving R.Kelly. The Marie Kondo show (I'm a Konmari detractor but very curious). Deep-sea anglerfish mating.

Yup, it's here.

What I'm aiming for in 2019
  • Writing the rest of this book with Amina!
  • Making dinner for friends more often.
  • Kicking my Amazon addiction. (Except for friends who have asked me to pre-order their books and for things I absolutely can't find anywhere else.)
  • Paying more attention to my emotions.
  • Working until my laptop battery dies, then taking a break to recharge in every sense.
  • Upgrading my newsletter subscription software—shout out to all of you who brave the annoying current system, especially when it comes to gift subscriptions. I'm working on it.
  • Going away by myself for a weekend.
  • Writing at least one feature I’m really proud of that’s not a profile.
  • Making a full-size quilt.
  • Fully internalizing the fact that I AM THE CANDY.

Some things you're looking forward to in 2019
  • An empty planner - makes you feel like all the possibilities are open.
  • Cooking from the new Ottolenghi cookbook (Simple), and hosting friends for dinners in your tiny studio apartment! You just bought a folding table and chairs.
  • A new job in a new country with money to spend on yourself.
  • Figuring out what 'home' means.
  • Continuing on your path to recovery from your mental illness and your trauma, and continuing to fail and forgive yourself and keep moving forward.
  • Driving across the country! Visiting the Grand Canyon! Going to Israeli burning man!
  • Connecting with cool ladies in your new city AKA making new friends.
  • Deepening your friendships.
  • Rediscovering yourself at 36!
  • Seriously delving into the possibility of home ownership.
  • Living an out life.
  • Not having to write the number 8 so much--your 9s are much better. [Ed. note: OMG I thought I was the only one.]
  • Buying a new couch, and investing in some things that will make your apartment one of your favorite places to be.
  • All the books you'll read.
  • Being more engaged in local politics.
  • A trip to Barcelona, Cinque Terre, Zagreb and Dubrovnik. Just the names make your toes curl.
  • Making your son proud that his mom finished her phd when he was little. (Even if the idea of being away from him makes you feel sick. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
  • Marvel movies because you're a geek at heart.
  • Your gray hair growing in.
  • Embracing the Extra. No need to hide it. YOU CARE THAT MUCH and ARE THAT EXCITED.
  • Starting a zine with some friends.
  • Cuddles with nieces and nephews.
  • When the leaves start to change colour and the air cools and winter whispers that it's on its way.
  • Shaking off the final few fucks you give about what people think of you. And finally paying for this newsletter, because you love it. [Ed. note: I did not make this one up!!]
  • Being more assertive with your choices.
  • Fighting the good fight without feeling like you need to be (or actually are) under the covers half the time. You're aiming for like 10% and you think you can do it!
  • Putzing in your garden.
  • Being a mentor.
  • Your child's first words. You can't wait to finally discover how they think!
  • Watching Alexandria Ocasio Cortez's IG stories.
  • Kushner perp walk!
  • Finding a balance between really loving what you do and engaging and learning in a really complete and dedicated way, while also knowing how to turn your brain off and saving bandwidth to rest and recover when you get home from the office.
  • Cheese crisps. Cheese crisps are the best.
  • Continually making the most of this life and finding new ways to become a better person.
  • Being alive.
One more ed. note: I loved all of your answers to my little end-of-year questionnaire, and I'm sorry I couldn't include every single one. Thanks for sharing so much of yourselves! Especially in response to this last question about the new year. I felt so much excitement and hope as I read your answers.

2019 Guides
I've been bookmarking guides that claim to help you reflect on your previous year and be intentional about the new one. Maybe one of these will appeal to you—now, a month from now, or halfway through the year when you feel like a fresh start? Anyway, figured I'd share: I use a combo of the Year Compass review questions, Jen's list-making tactic (aided by my 2018 google cal), and the Get Bullish guide. Your mileage will most definitely vary.

Testimonials
"Your newsletter is well worth its weight in gold. Philosophical question: what does an email weigh?" - Elke. I googled it: "To store a typical email takes about 8 billion electrons. Eight billion sounds like big number, but put them on a scale, and they weigh only about two ten thousandths of a quadrillionth of an ounce."

"I love your newsletter. It’s phenomenal. You do a great thing. Thank you." - Edward. It’s in the span of my links, The reach of my list, The curve of my charts. The choice of my gifs. I’m an email. Phenomenally. Phenomenal email, That’s me.

This newsletter is probably not going to finish its 2018 reflective exercise.
Forward it to someone who's firmly in the new year.
