THE WHAT LIST 100% Editorial picks. No pay for play. Ever. The Book. Fleishman Is In Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner captures all the angst, frustration, miscommunication, midlife crisis, and betrayal in a long-term marriage amidst the posh environs of New York's elite. Her debut novel is being compared to hard-hitting male writers, a backhanded compliment literary reviewers often make when praising female authors. We prefer how Elizabeth Gilbert put it: "Just the sort of thing that Philip Roth or John Updike might have produced in their prime (except, of course, that the author understands women)." The Recipes. Wondering what to eat these lazy summer days? Take a page from the members in our community and try your hand at these recipes. The Rice. We had tea yesterday with our friend Keith Belling, creator of popchips, who has launched another eye-popping product: Right Rice, a new grain made from vegetables that cooks faster and has more protein. We whipped up a batch of Lemon Pepper and served it with prawns. Delicious and so much more nutritious. Check it out. The Lab. One of our occupational hazards, being in the business of product research and trolling the internet for the latest and greatest, is that we click to buy more often than we should. Our latest purchase is Jillian Dempsey's Gold Sculpting Bar, a vibrating wand for the face that looks like an elegant razor (except it's smooth) and is said to make skin appear vibrant, toned, lifted, and contoured. It's a beautiful product, we love Jillian's Insta (and occasional photos of her gorgeous husband Patrick) and it feels soothing on the face, so much better than the electrical rollers that sting. We'll give you a full review in the fall but so far so good. |
