THE WHAT LIST 100% Editorial picks. No pay for play. Ever. The Music. There's a wildly intriguing Mongolian metal band called The Hu (most excellent name choice) trending right now with an epic Game of Thrones-vibe and millions of views on YouTube. Mongolia just moved higher on our bucket list. The Magazine. Commissioned by NOWNESS, Define Beauty: Process is a strikingly beautiful and original video by Rhea Dillon, a brilliant performance artist who has a soulful, poetic way of seeing to the core. It's visual art, political statement, poetry, heartbreak, and soaring filmmaking all in one. Just watch it. The Movie. If you think every animated superhero film is the same you haven't seen Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. It's a super fresh art experience that will send you on a brain train through various genres of classic comic book pop scenes punctuated by deeply relatable and beloved characters more than any spidey saga we've seen before. The soundtrack is also hard hitting including tracks by Nicki Minaj, Post Malone, and Lil Wayne. The Motivation. Years ago the filmmaker David Shiyang Liu made a film inspired by the words of Ira Glass, which in turn was watched by filmmaker Daniel Sax who described it as "the most inspiring and motivating video I had ever seen in my life" and then made a film inspired by David's. Both films are for people like us who have no problem putting in the work to achieve audacious goals but plagued by self-doubt along the way. Here's Daniel Sax's The GAP By Ira Glass and David Shiyang Liu's Ira Glass On Storytelling. If you need a creative pick-me-up, this is it. |
