Hey y'all,

Happy and honestly relieved to be back from a two-week vacation. Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. The pain of traveling with kids and how photographs lie.

  2. The Believer has a new website with its entire archive online for free. There's so much good stuff in there, but I'd like to shout out Paul Collins' 2004 essay, "The Lost Symphony," which contained a lot of research I used for the history section of my first book, Newspaper Blackout.

  3. I didn't get much reading done in the past two weeks, but I did manage to finish John McPhee's Draft No. 4: On the Writing Process, which was very good. (I also reread Sam Anderson's great profile of him.)

  4. Summer boredom and making art out of bugs.

  5. I was delighted by how many people sent me this video of Kraftwerk performing live with an astronaut in space. Y'all really know me.

  6. An appreciation of Creedence Clearwater Revival.

  7. The novelist Elizabeth Arthur has reissued some of her long-out-of-print novels

  8. Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine shows off his guitars and how he discovered his sound. Made me want to go crank Loveless and give MBV another listen.

  9. So sad to hear that food critic Jonathan Gold died. If you haven't watched the documentary about him, City Of Gold, I highly, highly recommend it. Here are remembrances from Ruth Reichl, Ann Friedman, and Helen Rosner, and here's a cut-up eulogy for him made out of his restaurant reviews. What a cool guy. (Why do the good ones keep leaving us?)

  10. Remember: Real wealth is never having to spend time with assholes.
