Music On Repeat at The What HQ

Hello Wonderful.
By the time you read this issue, our small team will be on a convoy up north for a work retreat to figure out what great things we can bring you for Fall/Winter 2018. We'll be testing products, reading books, listening to new releases, researching what's next, and catching up on shows for our What to Watch issue in September. Know of anything under the radar you think we should review? Drop us some knowledge here.

100% Editorial picks. No pay for play. Ever.

The Tracks.  We've been listening compulsively to Father John Misty (who is neither a Father nor a John) otherwise known as Josh Tillman, the exceedingly hip (h-h-ot!) singer, songwriter, guitarist, and drummer formerly of Fleet Foxes. His album God's Favorite Customer is witty, unconventional, and mellow in a 70s AM Radio, soft rock kind of way but with a modern edge. Imagine the vocals of vintage Beck in a blender with early Elton John (piano and all) and a 1/4 teaspoon of Gerry Rafferty. The Palace demonstrates this blend to perfection. If that sounds divine, get ready to worship our newest American idol.

The Book.  Speaking of unconventional, we just finished My Year Of Rest And Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh, an oddball story of a listless young woman who strategizes a way to sleep her year away with the help of a mountain of pharmaceuticals prescribed to her by an unstable psychiatrist she finds in the Yellow Pages. It's darkly funny, tragic, and a glimpse at the cockamamie habits people develop in an effort to heal themselves and feel connected.

The Perennial.  We've been anxiously following the amazing journey of Ben Lecomte, the 51-year old who is swimming across the Pacific Ocean from Tokyo to San Francisco to raise awareness about the state of the world's oceans. Along the way, his team is collecting data and conducting experiments, including observations in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Follow along with us here.

The Snooze.  If swimming 5,500 miles of open ocean over the course of six months isn't your type of journey, perhaps you'd consider taking this one with us.

The Collection.  Here's a cool list of drawings, diagrams, and tips on Self-Care from our friends at The New York Times.

THE ESSENTIALS

with SUSAN GRIFFIN-BLACK

Everything is coming up roses this month ... and even when it's not, as it's been for us this summer, at least we can stop and smell everything rosy at EO. Our favorite product is the new Rose + Lemon Shower Gel that we use every morning. It's love and freshness in one gorgeous scent.

The Inspiration Behind Beloved Rose

After a thirty-year love affair with essential oils, EO's co-founder Susan Griffin-Black sought to create a perfume that would evoke the simple pleasure of human connection and the essence of an embrace. A true passion project, Beloved Rose is a celebration of Susan's expertise with essential oils and serves as her love letter to the world. The great Gertrude Stein once wrote "a rose is a rose is a rose." But then, she never encountered EO's farm-to-body essential rose oils that go into every EO rose-scented product. Please help support our supporter EO by clicking here to learn about the inspiration behind their new rose aromatherapy perfume.
