I just have to say, as a woman in music, it is really hard to be taken seriously as a musician and as a songwriter. | | Scratching it old school: Whodini's Jalil Hutchins holds up bandmate Grandmaster Dee, circa 1986. The year's two best films, according to the GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS, are both music movies, and neither of them is A STAR IS BORN. Which is not how you or anyone thought it was going to go down. There are moments when music seems like a cultural afterthought in a hurricane of TV, cinema and video games, and then there are moments when it becomes clear none of those other things would exist if not for music. This is one of those latter moments. The HOLLYWOOD FOREIGN PRESS ASSOCIATION says GREEN BOOK was the year's Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, and BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY was Best Motion Picture, Drama. (Don't ask about the categories; I don't get it either.) (Also, don't ask which category "A Star Is Born" was in; I've already forgotten.) (Also, who cares?) Golden Globes also went to MAHERSHALA ALI for his portrayal of pianist/composer DON SHIRLEY and RAMI MALEK for his take on QUEEN's FREDDIE MERCURY. Mercury's old bandmates BRIAN MAY and ROGER TAYLOR had good seats inside the BEVERLY HILTON. Both films, one a road movie and one more of a straight biopic, are more-or-less true stories set in the distant past and dogged by controversy about exactly how true and how fair they are. Which is important to remember even as we celebrate a great night for music. As Hollywood and Broadway both get deeper into the music storytelling business, the quality and truth of that storytelling should matter. Not the exact truth of every visual and every line of dialog—this is entertainment, not a deposition—but the bigger truths about who makes music, why they make it and what it means... "A Star Is Born" did win one Golden Globe, for Best Original Song, "SHALLOW," written by LADY GAGA, MARK RONSON, ANTHONY ROSSOMANDO and ANDREW WYATT. The winner for Original Score was JUSTIN HURWITZ for FIRST MAN. He pointedly thanked the "Los Angeles musicians" who recorded his score. Far too few film scores are recorded in LA these days... CHANCE THE RAPPER is now on the record as saying that working with R. KELLY was "a mistake," as was "taking this long to speak out." Your turn, RCA RECORDS. Call volume to the National Sexual Assault Hotline spiked during LIFETIME's premiere airing of SURVIVING R. KELLY Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
