Hey y'all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. I posted an 1,100-word blog post called "You Don't Have To Live In Public" and the next day the El Arroyo sign did it better with 11 words. (Remember: Hobbies help!)

  2. LEGO advertising and nostalgia.

  3. I read Tove Jansson's Moominpappa's Memoirs, which is certainly not my favorite of her works, but enjoyable. (I'm thinking about re-reading all the comics and The Summer Book.)

  4. I re-read Kurt Vonnegut's A Man Without A Country, which is "minor" Vonnegut, I guess, but sort of comforting, like a long letter saved from the cranky, Socialist Midwestern grandfather you never had. (This look at his daughter Edie's house combines a few of my current interests: Cape Cod [headed there in a bit for a short vacation] + converted barns a la Grand Designs.)

  5. I finished reading Horace's Epistles, which are terrific. Get the David Ferry translation! (If you need more to read, check out my favorites.)

  6. Ear candy: I have been playing Warren Zevon's "Mutineer" on a loop until I get too sad, and then I have to put on something like The Spinners. I'm also still jamming X's More Fun In The New World and Parquet Courts' Wide Awake! (Which, I discovered after buying it on vinyl, has terrific liner notes.) You can hear more of what's catching my ear in this Spotify playlist.

  7. Speaking of liner notes, I enjoyed this piece on Nirvana's Incesticide and Kurt Cobain's fight against macho culture.

  8. Eye candy: I love these drawings of Kraftwerk by artist Yosuke Kawamura. If you can track down a copy of his book Exotica, it's pretty great. (Hint: it's out-of-print, but there are PDFs floating around...)

  9. Margalit Fox retires from writing obituaries.

  10. Steal Like An Artist t-shirts are back on sale for only a few more days
