This week
I wrote about the meaning of the term "self-made," and what the debate about applying it to Kylie Jenner says about the state of class politics in America. And on the podcast, we take a spin around the world for some global feminist updates from Russia, Egypt, China, and Nepal.

I'm reading
How women's pain is policy for this administration. Julia Ioffe on the the drip-drip-drip of Trump-Putin revelations. My congressman, Adam Schiff, takes on Trump. Everyone has an accent. The people who comb the desert to mourn and mark migrants' deaths. Facebook is still abusing users' privacy—maybe it needs a constitution? Deconstructing thrift-store smell. Eternal inspo: Gellhorn! More recent hero: Aly Raisman. Against women's media. Personal myths and why they matter. The Disneyland of quilting. Sex ed for grown-ups. The peacefulness of using a phone with parental-control settings turned on. Twitch streamers who broadcast to no one. The case for unfollowing everyone. What writing 750 words a day can do for you. Spritzin'.

And Min Jin Lee's epic novel Pachinko. I'm in so deep. Thanks to everyone who recommended it!

Members only
I've had many people tell me the price of the members-only version of this newsletter (a mere $5 annually) is too low. But I like keeping it accessible. You can prove me right by becoming a paying member for just $5/year. As a bonus, you'll even get pie charts!

I'm looking & listening
Social workers address kids affected by family separation trauma. This New York mag cover art by Barbara Kruger. This very important photo of Keanu Reeves riding a horse down city streets (and the live-action version). Peggy Noland's CarToon Up. Megan Greenwell on the Longform Podcast.

GIFspiration
Same. But also... very much not same.

I endorse
Acknowledging the people who help you get it done. Years ago I had a page on my personal website that was just shout-outs to my friends. Somehow it got lost in the shuffle when I upgraded from Tumblr to a more complex personal site. But recently I decided to bring that page back. It's a way of acknowledging the many people who have helped me make and do all of the other stuff listed on my website, as well as a kind of permanent version of this "I endorse" section of the newsletter. I'd love it if everyone's website had a page like this, because none of us are self-made.

You endorse
2,000 Libros, a donation campaign that aims to send books to undocumented children who were separated from their parents. "As the news about children being separated from their parents broke, my friend Elizabeth made a Facebook post asking if anyone would be interested in collecting Spanish language books to send to them. After an outpouring of support, the project grew from a Google doc into a campaign in partnership with DC Books to Prisons, a project under the Washington Peace Center. 'Books are a small way of showing these children and teens that many other worlds exist,' Elizabeth wrote recently. You can help by checking out 2,000 Libros' wishlist." -Michelle.

Testimonials
"a nice break from the Internet's swirling abyss of garbage." -Sam Zabell. Ok, I know I kinda took this one out of context, but isn't this the best endorsement?

"It's taking all of my self control to save this week's @annfriedman weekly for a full day of airports on Sunday" -Sara. Delayed gratification!

This newsletter doesn't make itself every week.
Forward it to someone who helped make you.
