| | | | | | rantnrave:// Oh my god this eight-minute bossa nova explosion from jazz trumpeter JAIMIE BRANCH's new album FLY OR DIE II. Fierce. And double oh my god that rhythm section of JASON AJEMIAN and CHAD TAYLOR. I can't promise it will make you glad you woke up today but it will definitely make you *aware* you woke up today. Which seems to be at least part of the point of an album bracketed by two protest songs that see the prodigiously gifted Branch branching out into a new role as vocalist: the epic "PRAYER FOR AMERIKKKA PT. 1 & 2" and the extended middle finger of "LOVE SONG" ("for a**holes and clowns"). Her main weapon of protest, though, remains her trumpet, one of the most explosive instruments I've had the pleasure of hearing in a variety of live settings over the past year, an experience I can't recommend enough... Look who's on the cover of TIME, and oh by the way that's a really nice profile of STORMZY, who tells the magazine, "I know I'm the product of bare injustice. There are so many iconic, legendary, more influential grime songs that are never going to sell as much records as I've sold." He's giving back, in multiple ways... Vinyl mixtapes anyone? The audio cassette production business has been disrupted by a shortage of gamma ferric oxide, which puts the magnet in magnetic tape... The tougher part for him, once he gets out (which could be a soon as January), will be finding a club willing to book him.
