Today's lifeboat (and submarine)

Hello Wonderful.

California is being ravaged by wildfire and we've been in the dark since last week. But we have nothing to complain about. We're safe (so far) and we're heavy with grief for those who aren't so lucky. Firefighters and first responders never cease to astound. But also impressive are the many caring citizens who volunteer their time, money, and efforts to be helpful—they see a need and set about filling it—like Tyler Florence and his fellow chefs and volunteers from World Central Kitchen who have spent the last week feeding first responders and disaster victims. World Central Kitchen has served 10 million meals to those in need after disasters. You can help their mission by donating here.

LIFEBOATS &
SUBMARINES

October 30, 2019
by Gina Pell + Amy Parker

"The richest relationships are lifeboats, but they are also submarines that descend to the darkest and most disquieting places, to the unfathomed trenches of the soul where our deepest shames and foibles and vulnerabilities live, where we are less than we would like to be."

THE WHAT LIST

100% Editorial picks. No pay for play. Ever.

The Deep.

Maria Popova is the one-woman virtuoso behind Brain Pickings, a reader-supported intellectual haven for the philosophically and culturally curious. We are ardent fans of her work and recently stumbled across this gold mine called 13 Life-Learnings from 13 Years of Brain Pickings. Congratulations to Brain Pickings on their 13th Anniversary. Thank you for the soulful, thoughtful, and intellectual rigor you provide online at no cost. Support Brain Pickings here.

The Work.

Looking for your next favorite podcast? Download Hello Monday with LinkedIn's Jessi Hempel. We followed Jessi for years and appreciated her insightful reporting when she was a Senior Writer at WIRED. She uses that same laser-focused inquisitiveness to explore the changing nature of work and the way that work is changing us. We're currently listening to this week's episode with Lara Linney on What Makes Good Criticism. So good.

The Watch.

Looking for another show to obsess over? Damon Lindelof, the genius behind Lost and The Leftovers, has done it again. WATCHMEN is one of the strongest premieres we have ever seen on cable or elsewhere. Solid storytelling, visually captivating cinematography and costume design, creepy vignettes, and star performances by Don Johnson, Jeremy Irons, and the reigning queen of any screen she happens to grace ... Regina King. Damn!

The Ban.

Say goodbye to foie gras. It's about time.

THE WHAT SUMMIT 2019

TODAY IN THE CHRONICLE

We still owe you a full report on The What Summit but in the interim, we thought we'd give you a taste of the day from Catherine Bigelow's Culture Desk column at The San Francisco Chronicle. Catherine was the first journalist to write about Perennials so it's an incredible full-circle moment for us that she was able to see how the idea manifested two years later. Thank you, Catherine and everyone who helped bring our summit to life.

Thanks for reading
Love, Amy + Gina
