THE POSTMAN'S CORNER
where the world goes for its daily dose of humor
That which does not kill us makes us stronger.
Friedrich Nietzsche
GOOD MORNING POSTMAN FANS!
As you might guess fronm previous writings,
we live in a somewhat uh,
run do...well, lets just say "blighted" neighborhood.
25 years ago, when we first bought the house, it was a
decent, working class place, full of young families raising
their children etc. But of course, over the years, it faced
typical big city problems: An influx of slum lord owners, an
onslaught of gang problems etc. Many folks moved out, and with
the economy crash, we have a number of empty, distressed houses.
Not exactly the prime example of city life, the 'hood around
here definitely has seen its better days. To make matters
worse, with the declining enrollment of the public school
system, they closed the local city high school, a once prominent fixture
here and just a couple blocks away. Right in the center of
the area. For years, it sortof served as a little hub of
activity. There was a number of stores and mom and pop shops
across the street. There was a local grocery store, a little bigger
than a 7 11, and the students were always seen going in before
school, during lunch and after school, buying pop, candy bars and
all the other sundries that kids do. It was a little smaller than a full service type
operation, and it was the kind of place where Mom and Pop knew you
by your first name. There was also a ice cream shop just a little ways from
the bus stop that the kids patronized. The ice cream shop closed
up when the kids quit stopping for their cones after school.
The grocery store followed suit not long after. The business
district has a number of empty store fronts. The interesting
thing? the liquor store on the corner just remodled their
building and expanded. And my personal property taxes?
altho the value of the property is about half what it was before
2008, the taxes are more now than they ever were. And likely to go
up again this summer. While there is really not much point to this
monologue, other than to express the memories of a tired old man, there
are some important observations...If you want to be succesful in this world,
there are at least 1 of 2 things u wanna do, sell booze or collect taxes.
Both seem to be recession proof and economically stable, no
matter what the economy does.
TRUST ME...s' truth!
We do hope you enjoy today's issue!
Cordially
