Savvy travelers are purchasing cheap fares to undesireable destinations with layovers in more desireable destinations. Then they skip the second leg of the trip, staying at their intended city for less than a direct flight to that destination would cost.
Here are more details on how it works and similar ways to save with creative ticketing:
Skipping a leg of your trip automatically cancels the rest of your itinerary so don't attempt this strategy if you're planning to fly back on the same ticket.
Carry-on luggage only! This strategy doesn't work if you need to check bags as they'll arrive at the final destination on the ticket.
Often a round-trip fare is less expensive than a one-way ticket. In these cases, it's less expensive to buy the round-trip and "throw away" the return trip.
While frowned upon by the airline industry, it is legal. Be discreet but don't lie about it if you're confronted by the airline (that could be considered fraud).
If using creative ticketing methods more than just occassionally, experienced flyers recommend not associating their frequent flier numbers with reservations.
Sites such as Skiplagged can help you identify the cheapest fares to specific destinations saving you the hastle of searching yourself.
